Could you please share with me what brand of digital SD memory you use .. and if you've ever had any problems with your cards.

I am only purchasing SD Kingston or Lexar (anywhere from 40-60X) as they are reputable but there are so many more alternatives on the market that are on sale .. and I'm sure they are on sale because the competition is fierce! Eeker

If you have had great success with some of the newer type digital memory cards please let me know!

Thank you in advance! Smiler

Tammie...

In addition to the cards you mentioned, PNY, Memorex and SanDisk are also great.

I use SanDisk and they seem to have a good brand name.

I don’t think it really matters what brand of card you use.... most of them are Ok. Just remember, even in the best, expensive brands you can strike a dud one Frowner Frowner

Several people say go for a bigger card, i.e. 1 or 2GB. I say "NO, stick with a smaller one". The reason being, that if your bigger card gets corrupted or lost, you lose all of your photos.

Everywhere is great, but there is nowhere as good as home..... New Zealand.

1GB is hardly a "big" card these days, and with modern Digital SLRs typically taking images which are 30-40MB in size at the highest resolution quality setting, a 1GB card will only store 30-40 such images.

I always regard a memory card as nothing more than temporary storage for that day's pictures. Each evening, I transfer the pictures to my iPod, and reformat the memory card for the next day.

Brand name honestly doesn't matter. I must have had dozens of different memory cards over the years, and have never had a problem. Buy whatever's on "special offer" at the time.

To my mind it's not worth the extra money to buy a "high speed" card. The only time card speed is going to matter is if you do something like "continuous shooting" - ie hold down the shutter and let the camera take images as rapidly as it can - and that's probably not something you'll be doing a lot of on a typical coach tour.

512Mb cards fit easily on a CD for backups. You can use an internet cafe or a photo shop for this service for hassle free backups.

As long as there are options, remember the ole adage about putting all your eggs in one basket.

Another one of the travel "what ifs" I still subscribe to; I have let go of others; I bring 1 256 and 2 128s. I have also trained myself to severely delete at the end of every day once the impulse of the moment has died down. Big Grin

Roxy....the advantage of travelling on a group tour is if for some reason you loose your photo's, there is always someone in the group happy to help out with copies of similar photo's

128MB memory cards aren't a lot of use with many of today's high-resolution cameras. On my camera at its highest resolution setting I could store 3 pictures on a 128MB card Smiler.

Hi Missie, yes I have exchanged photos quite often in the past...of course all photogs are not created equal! Big Grin Big Grin

Hi Chris, I suspect most of us may not have as high end a camera as you do. My little 3.2 does a fabulous job...except for night shots...."IS" will be on my next purchase for sure! Big Grin I find taking 3 compact flash cards no impostion at all; they are so tiny and easily stored, plus I don't need to bring any storage gadget to add to the "stuff" already being brought along, nor have any evening transfer job to be bothered with. Coping with recharging is enought for me! Big Grin Big Grin

I agree Roxy ... I have five memory cards and the thought of having one more electronic gadget such as an IPod would just push me over the edge. I am technically challenged and if I did something wrong I could never live with myself and my comfort level is what is MOST important.

Thank you everyone for your input so far. This is my first REAL nice digital camera and there are so many memory cards out there that are new to the market ... so this is helping to qualm my fears about some of them.

Chris .. I am assuming that you are shooting in RAW mode? The reason I ask is I can also shoot in RAW as well BUT I will only use that setting if I feel it is a photo that will need to be manipulated later. Otherwise, my camera will remain at the next highest level to that.

I have a 6.1 megapixel Pentax SLR and a 1 GB card gives me just over 300 shots at it's BEST setting. (one lower than RAW)

Thanks again everyone! Smiler

Hi Tammie,

Most of the major brand of memory cards will be fine for your camera. The only thing you have to watch out for are the fakes. I fell into that trap... thankfully; I will be able to get a refund. Just stick with the major online retailers and you'll be fine.

Check out this link: http://members.shaw.ca/fakesandisk/

I only purchase SanDisk Ultra II cards and did know not know that there are many fakes being offered online. Be sure to research the company and their products. Now that I am aware, I thought I would pass this on.

Good shooting.

I have my iPod with me anyway for other reasons (listening to music and audio books), so it's not as if I'm carrying anything extra. I just don't like the thought of running out of storage space at a crucial moment, and that's a non issue if you can just dump your pictures each evening and start afresh each morning with an empty card.

In Australia from an online shop it costs about $50 for a 1gb memory card where as a 30gb ipod costs around $450 so you are getting a lot more memory for your money Smiler
