One point that's perhaps worth noting is that, if you have a memory card reader in your PC, you can format the card on the PC rather than the camera. This is sometimes easier to do.

Roxy,

Are you referring to the one on Hicksville road at Sunrise. If so, I've never been there, although I pass it every day. I go to the one on the corner of Sunrise and Washington Avenue in Seaford.

Somehow, I get the impression that you are still a LI "gal" at heart. "You can take the gal out of LI, but.............................."

Its the water- not the best tasting- but our bagels, cheesecake and Pizza cannot be duplicated anywhere else- much like the Guinness brewed in Dublin with its Black ( peat influenced) water which gives it that distinctive Darker color and taste. Roxy you need to come for a visit and stock up on bagels.

Bagels, of course, originate in Germany (they were taken to the US by German immigrants), and every outdoor market in Germany has more different varieties of them than you could conceive of. I don't know how they compare with New York bagels, but the German variety are, without doubt, the "genuine article" Smiler.

But it is the NY WATER that makes them the standard for consumption by Americans- most sought after/requested item when visiting or sending packages to college students and relatives residing out of NY. I would not know how they compare to the German variety. My German great grandparents died years before I was born.Maternal great grandparents owned a German Restaurant in NYC .

That's interesting, Chris. I've seen those HUGE pretzels in Germany, but not bagels. I hope to be in Berlin for a couple of weeks next year; I'll definitely keep my eyes open.

Liz, when I have a bit more time, I gotta tell ya my "Guiness beer in Waterford" story.

rmontouri- I hope to go to Germany myself next year. I have to give equal time to the other half of my ancestry. A CO-WORKER is going in November,2005. I hope to visit the village named for my paternal ancestors. It is southeast of Berlin. My maternal German ancestors came from Frankfurt and Munich. The 50/50 split came two generations apart from paternal vs maternal mix as a result of intermarriage( yes that includes different religions). Waterford, Ireland- SO MUCH MORE than the Crystal Factory

Hi Bob, yes a true NYer just living in CT! Big Grin

Actually the bagel store is on Hicksville Rd. in a shopping center where the roller rink used to be - not sure if both are still there! Smiler My kids recently stopped at All American for a craving fix of their burgers and fries. 2 weeks before I moved up here in 1998, I stopped there and overdosed on them...7 years now...reckon I'm getting to the 7 year itch stage! Big Grin

As Liz says ... it's all on the water for a real bagel. The pretzel is not the same as a bagel. We have giant size pretzels here too...the umbrella rooms all over Manhattan carry them for a munch on the run.

Roxy,

I've never seen a pretzel that big, here; I wonder if we're thinking of the same thing. The ones I'm thinking of were at least a foot long. Some of the people on tour were buying them as souvenirs or to be photographed with.

Regarding the water, the city consistently gets good marks. When one member of my family visits me (from Brooklyn) he brings his own water to be used when we make coffee. Oh, well - whatever turns them on. Confused

Can I just make sure I've got my terms right?

A bagel is a ring-shaped thing.

A pretzel is a sort of "knotted" thing?

Is that right?

Both are German, and you'll find endless stalls selling both at any German market.

Bob, never saw the foot long ones Big Grin That would be a Kodak moment.

Chris, yes you are correct. Some have the preference of putting melted cheese or mustard on the pretzels. You can also buy these in the frozen foods section of the supermarket and they come out quite good - actually nice and soft instead of jaw breakers. Big Grin
