Rarogirl, With the size of those pretzels, a frugal traveler could make them account for all 3 meals in a day. Bob "There is only one sucess--- To be able to spend your life in your own way." Morley |

Thanks. We don't have either (except in specialist shops) here, so I always forget which is which.
You get all sorts of different "flavoured" pretzels in Germany and Austria - apple, cinnamon, chocolate, and so on, as well as the plain ones. They make a really delicious (and cheap) lunch which you can eat "on the move". Chris |

Roxy,
I was so excited when I saw your post about All American and New York bagels. Finally someone else to share with how wonderful All American is. My entire family on both parent's sides grew up in Massapequa, Long Island and all my life I had to hear about how great the burgers and fries were at All American and how when they were young they'd walk there and get their fix almost every day. I'd hear about how they couldn't compare to any other burger places in the world. I of course filed these stories with the ones that were about how they walked barefoot in the snow to school, uphill both ways...." Yet, then I went to Long Island almost two years ago and I tried All American. I felt like I had to bow down and worship the place. Absolutely the best I've ever tasted, no contest there at all. I dream of their burgers that melt in your mouth all the time. And as for the New York bagels...I had them every day when I was visiting there and I've been craving them ever since! In California we don't have bagels that can begin to measure up...I think we just make bread in circles now that I've tasted a NY bagel. In fact I planned my return trip home to go through JFK when I just went to Italy only so I could buy some bagels at the airport. Unfortunately they had to revise my plane schedule due to delays and so I flew through Frankfurt then straight home to Los Angeles. The good news is that I got home quicker, the bad news was no NY bagels. And it's true what everyone from NY says...it's all in the water...it's definitely the secret ingredient. ~I want my Trevi Fountain coin to kick in so I can go back to Rome!~ |

Bluefaery, You can also count me in! When Roxy and I first start talking about "All American" (I guess about a year ago) I couldn't believe there was anyone else that knew about the place. I walk past it every day, as I walk from Seaford along Merrick Road, past the cemetery where some Revolutionary War soldiers are buried (I think it is the "Jones family cemetery) and end up in Massapequa Park. It takes an enormous amount of self control to pass by and not go in. Great burgers, great price and I don't even want to think about how much fat. I guess that's the price we pay for the taste. Isn't it the same story with Nathan's fries in Coney island. It's been quite a while since I was there. Many also claim that the water (along with the ovens) also account for our great Pizza. Cheers, Bob |

Hi Bluefaery, Wow - the world is surely growing smaller by the day!! All American is an "Institution". I have friends who still travel from Babylon Township to get their grease fix!
Bob you have a will of iron! I'd cave in passing by with regularity. There used to be a Nathan's on Long Beach Road in Oceanside. A lesser trek than Brooklyn. To get back on topic so as not to alarm the topic police |

LizV,
You are too sweet that you would offer that! I'm okay though, I have some family that lives a very short drive from the city (in New Jersey) and they've promised to bring me some bagels when they come for Christmas so until then I'll survive. I'm also trying to have them go to Ferraro's in little Italy to get me some Cannoli's...truly the best cannoli's in the world that I've tasted and I even taste compared in Italy (they measured up in some spots in Italy but never surpassed Ferraro's). Anyhow, if I ever do need a major bagel fix I'll know who to ask a favor from. And Roxy, yes it is truly a small world. I run into people all the time that are from Long Island and it makes me laugh since it's not really that large of a place but it seems like everyone and their mother lived there at one point, or maybe it's just that a lot of former Long Islander's have transplanted themselves to Southern California...not really sure. As to the formatting memory cards topic, thanks for the info from all you pro's. I noticed that when I loaded my Italian pictures on my computer there were pictures from a baby shower I'd gone to last february that I had erased on my camera that were showing up again. I'll have to try the memory card re-formatting now and hopefully take care of that problem. ~I want my Trevi Fountain coin to kick in so I can go back to Rome!~ |

It's probably a good thing to get into the habit of doing, Roxy. You could very well go a lifetime and experience no problems doing things the way you are right now, but doing a "format" rather than an "erase all" flushes out all the "garbage" which can build up over time on a memory card and potentially be a source of problems. The other, purely practical, side of things, is that if you have hundreds of pictures on your memory card, "format" can be a lot faster than "erase all"! Chris |

Chris,
You're right, as usual -after reading on this thread about reformatting the memory card, I was stunned at how fast it happened - just to check, I went back to "review" and the card was clean! Thanks for the good advice. |

bluefaery,
It's funny that you should mention canoli in Italy. The ABSOLUTE worse cannoli that I have had (and I have had more than my fair share ((including Ferraro's)) ) was in Taormino, Sicily, the place where they were, supposedly, invented. A few of us stopped by an outdoor café, a beautiful view with Etna in the distance. The view may have been beautiful, but the cannoli was horrible. Obviously, the shopkeeper saw us as the perfect opportunity to get rid of "yesterday's" pastry. The filling had the consistency of yogurt and was sour and the shell had the consistency of a pancake. They certainly didn't add the filling, just before serving. roxy, Who would have ‘thunk' that "All American" would have been a topic of discussion on an international forum. The next thing you know, they'll have a "Zagat" rating. You're right, it is difficult to walk past but, equally difficult is passing by the Carvel, right next door. What a combination - an All American burger with a Carvel for dessert. I, along with Chris, (and Judy, who has seen the difference it makes) would encourage you to format your cards. As he suggested, (and Mr. Murphy's law requires) problems will arise at the most inopportune time. Could you ever forgive yourself if you missed the shot of a "certain someone" stomping on his "towel wrapped" laundry? Now, THERE'S a "Kodak moment." – Sorry, Chris, I couldn't resist. Moving right along................. In addition to Nathan's in Oceanside, there is one on Hempstead Turnpike - either Levittown or Bethpage. Somehow, tho', with its manicured appearance and "nouveau" decor, it loses something in "translation," when compared with the original. Cheers, Bob .............................................
