Greetings!
Will be over doing the London Week and Amazing Britain this summer. Am considering taking my digital camera but am wondering about getting the pictures back home. Do the internet cafes (or anywhere else) have provisions for downloading and mailing images home? Are digital images stored on memory chips damaged by airport x-ray machines? Any help appreciated. |

Hi Snowflake, click up top, right on the "search" field - under the Photography thread there is a host of info!

You probably don't want to e-mail your pictures home - the files will be far too big.
Many internet cafes offer the facility of burning a CD-R from a memory card, but the service can be quite pricey - eg I was in an Internet cafe in Edinburgh fairly recently, and they charged 10 for the service. Airport scanners won't damage memory cards. If you want to take a lot of pictures, probably the best solution for storage is to get a dedicated picture storage device for the purpose. I've got a "XS-Drive" which works very well indeed - see http://www.xs-drive.com for details. There are many similar devices on the market. All these devices work in a similar way - they have a slot for the memory card which they read and store the pictures on a hard disk. When you get home, you connect it up to your PC, and transfer all the pictures from the storage device to your PC's hard disk. As Roxy says, if you use the search facility of the board you'll find lots of previous discussions of these subjects. Regards, Chris |

I thought your x drive got stolen. I'm glad you still have it. Snowflake: I am told that photoshops in Europe, as opposed to internet cafes, charge a much smaller amount to copy your memory cards to a cd. Glenn www.pbase.com/gsrunyan |

I have phots scanned into my computer in PDF and JPEG formats. Can I "upload" all of these to my Olympus camera onto blank SmartMedia cards?

Maybe. Depends on format of the card, etc.
Why would you want to? The computer is a safer place to keep them!! Glenn www.pbase.com/gsrunyan |

Khchristianhna,
You should be able to that as long as the total size of files don't exceed the capacity of your memory card. I use this method to transfer edited images from my PC to have them printed at the store. The memory card doesn't have to be "blank" as you can delete files on the card when your camera is connected to your computer. Not sure what you intend to do with images in PDF format on a memory card. |

I have a new home theater with the slots in it to insert memory cards and would like to take my pics from computer to transfer to memory cards so I can see my pictures on the "big screen"!!! We insert our memory cards right after we take the pictures and is wonderful to see 52 inch pictures and make your own slide shows!

Agreed - a USB card reader is definitely the way to go as far as reading and writing memory cards. I use a cheap "multi format" reader with 4 card slots for the different types of memory card (CF, SD, Memory Stick, Smart Media). It only cost a few pounds, needs no "drivers" installing on the machine, and works beautifully.
As Bob describes, you just plug it into your PC's USB port and 4 new drives magically appear, one for each card slot. You can use it both for copying files between the PC and a memory card, and also for copying files _between_ different memory cards. Regards, Chris |

Any shop which sells digital cameras will sell them; they are an extremely common "accessory" and there are literally dozens of different ones on the market.
I'd suggest getting a reader which will handle all the different card formats; they aren't much more expensive than the single format variety, and they're much more versatile. Regards, Chris |

In Great Britain there is Boots, big departmental stores, where they provide downloading the pics onto CD and charge 2.50 pounds per CD . They got ours done in an hour.
