I ran across this link today and thought it might be of interest. This is from the US Transportation Security Administration. Among other things, the official warning is to have 800 (and higher) speed film, film that will be X-rayed more than 5 times, and professional grade film hand inspected.

http://www.tsa.gov/trav_consumers/traveling_film.shtm

Of interest also (to me anyway) is that the warning about putting film in checked baggage doesn't mention international flights. Unless that's an oversight, US domestic flights are implicitly included.

Thanks Michael. Just as an added note, I've copied the first few lines of the warning which clearly state that NO undeveloped film should be in your checked baggage.

"Travelers & Consumers
Special Considerations - Film

WARNING: Equipment used for screening checked baggage will damage your undeveloped film. You should remove all undeveloped film from your checked baggage and place it in your carry-on baggage.

At the passenger security checkpoint, you should remove the following types of film from your carry-on baggage and ask for a hand inspection......"

The warning goes on to list certain types of film, but it's lengthy and those interested can read it at the website Michael has pointed out. Thanks again for heads-up. Jack

I find this really interesting because the last few times I requested a hand check of film, the security officers refused. I had even put my film in zip lock bags in see-through canisters. Thanks for the posting!

I have always been granted the hand inspection in the US. Not so in Europe, in fact, on Sept 9, last year, it was denied in London's Gatwick, before any big trouble.
September 13 this year, I requested hand inspection at MIA, and they have a special mild machine just for undeveloped film. No hassle.

I have been told on at least 4 occasions to but cameras and film in carryon. The xray for carryon is milder than that for large luggage. So that's what I do.
