It is my understanding that there are relatively new photo restrictions in The Louvre and other Paris museums .....Even non-flash photography is no longer permitted in any of the painting galleries.....though other areas of the museum ( statuary) still permit it.
Could any recent Paris visitors comment on this, please. Thank you.

I visited the Louvre in May last year when the only photo restrictions enforced were that you couldn't take photos near the Mona Lisa, otherwise it was ok. You probably could get away with non flash photography if done discreetly since the places are vast. From experience however, I find it best to enjoy the beauty of the objects and buy a guidebook with photos done well, rather than take photos partially obscured by reflections, glass and poorly lit.

Below is the official Louve website, I have had a look at it and cannot see anything written about taking photo's in the Louve. There is a "Contact us" button, you may like to contact them and ask your question. Smiler

Thank you both for taking the time to respond. I know that any photos I might take myself will not compare with photos of the paintings done professionally (on cards or in books) but I enjoy personalizing the museum experience.....
I guess the best solution is to contact the museum directly.

best regards,
Bruce

My original post was 7 months ago , when planning my first trip to Paris. I just returned from a 2 week European trip ( 6 days in Paris ) and thought I'd post info on my visit to the Louvre.....
The only part of the museum that was off-limits to photographing was the gift shop. Even with the occasional flash going off, I never saw a guard approach anyone taking photos....even of the Mona Lisa. I'm thinking that perhaps it is circumstances that determines photo policy.....off-season, respectful, smaller crowds vs. high season, larger crowds of inconsiderate tourists....

thanks again for your replies,
bruce

p.s. The average number of viewers around the Mona Lisa at any one time was about 35, yet there were times I saw only 2-3 people there....
ah....the joys of traveling off-season! :-)
