Hi Joey,

I'm not 100% certain about this, but I used to have an F717 and looking at the F828 in shops, it appears identical as far as the physical size goes. I'd imagine there's an excellent chance that F717 accessories will work on the F828. Probably best to check with a Sony dealer, however!

Regards,

Chris

hi chris,

i did talk to sony, twice. one person said it would work, while another said that sony would not authorize it. i guess i could go to a camera shop and try it. (if they have it in stock) but, i have a feeling that they will be coming out with a couple of len's for the F828. so i will just wait.

caitie,

i asked if they had a silencer, but there were none in stock. Smiler

Joey,

I assume you're talking about that (relatively) expensive 1.7x telephoto. Sony's website shows it as an accessory for the 717 but not the 828, so they're not interested in selling it for the 828. I would think that physically there would be no mounting problem as both cameras have a 58mm lens thread (unless the 828 lens is less "robust" and couldn't handle the extra weight). Maybe it is optimized for the 38-190 zoom range of the 717 but not for the 28-200 of the 828. There's not much difference between 190 & 200. There's of course a big difference on the wide end but we're talking a telephoto add-on. Lots of people mix & match aux lenses. Canon & Olympus made some that folks use on other brands of cameras for sure, often using step-up or step-down rings to mount them, so I personally wouldn't be overly concerned about using it on a different Sony model. For peace of mind, your best bet would be as you propose, find the 828 in a store and shoot a little with your memory card & aux lens (if they'll let you). My money says they'll work fine.

Joey,

Okay, don't do it.....

Here's a paste. Someone was asking about using 3 717 aux lenses on the 828.

<paste below>
(2) VCL-HGD0758 58mm 0.7X Wide Angle Conversion Lens

(3) VCL-HGD1758 58mm High Grade 1.7X Telephoto Lens

Those 2 work with the 828 "as is". Just be carefull because of the extra weight that the lens barrel has to support. As you may now, the zoom in the 828 moves the lens barrel longer... I normally only use the wide angle lens and only with the camera in the widest zoom possible.

1) VCL-MHG07A 52mm High Grade 0.7X Wide Angle Lens

That lens won't fit in the 717 or in the 828 unless you find a step down ring. And in case you do it will probably show vignetting. Avoid it and go with the VCL-HGD0758 which will give you the same angle.
<paste above>

Sure sounds iffy because of the weight. If it were me I would hold off until Sony came out with a telephoto designed for the 828.

hey michael,

thanks so much. i did look on dpreview, but could not find it.

i agree it's not worth taking the risk with the lens, i think i will just wait and see what sony comes up with for the 828.

again thanks,

joey

Joey - Don't waste your money on a silencer; just use a pillow. (Unless you plan on needing a silencer on many occasions in which case you might run out of pillows!)

Joey - no, Friendswood is near Houston. Arlington in between Dallas and Fort Worth, but I did live up in that "neck of the woods" for many, many years also. Why do you ask? Do you have "history" there or are you just trying to figure out where to send Guido to bust my kneecaps? Smiler
