Hi All,
here's a question: is there truth in the discussion along the lines of - Photography in Cairo Museum & other tombs is now forbidden? I've been reading the following thread recently, much to my alarm... http://egyptologist.org/discus/messages/41/7577.html?1057529524 who's been there recently? |

Hi,
I have not been to Egypt in a while now but I do specifically remember that photography was not allowed in the Cairo Museum - basically they want you to purchase their slides, posters, etc. I thought that I would be clever and tried to sneak my camera in but we were searched at the entreance and the camera was checked until we left the museum. That was pretty much the same story in the tombs - we were told that the flashes from the cameras would, over time, damage the paintings, so no flash photography allowed. I don't know about digital cmeras as they didn't exist when I was there. |

This is not unusual: photography of all kinds is forbidden in the Sistine Chapel and no flash is permitted in the Vatican Museums or the Duomo in Florence or the palace of Versailles. Cameras had to be checked, actually your entire camera bag was x-rayed and checked, at the Thysenn Museum in Madrid.

Might not be unusual, but would be a new one. We were there last year & had no problem at all taking non-flash photo's anywhere (they charged extra though for the privilege)
I can understand not wanting to fade or expose things to harsh light, but I think blanket bans are likely to put people off going. |
