Several months back there was a discussion about long term storage for digital photos and someone recommended Mitsui CDs. I recently bought a digital camera and have found some websites that sell the Mitsui brand. But I can't remember if the recommendation was for gold or silver. Is there a big difference between them? Thanks.

Thanks, Michael. Do you think just copying the images to a couple of CDs is enough? Do I need any other form of backup? I am terrified to remove them from the memory card!

I honestly don't think it matters what "brand" of CD you use. I must have burned literally _thousands_ of CDs over the last ten years or so; not one single one has ever "gone bad". If they fail, they fail at the writing stage; if they write successfully, they stay "good".

Writing to two different CDs is more than good enough. A CD is a heck of a lot "safer" a storage medium than a memory card!

Regards,

Chris

Chris, you made me feel a lot better! Nonetheless, I do think I'll buy the Mitsui CDs just to make myself feel more secure if nothing else. I also currently have the images on my hard drive, but I won't be able to back up all my photos on my hard drive indefinitely. Although I have a cousin who bought a second hard drive for exactly that reason.

Keep an eye out and you can always find blank cd's at good prices: last weekend found Walgreen's drugstores selling Sony 48X cds for $9.99 for a spindle of 50. Bought two.
