I have a 1gb card for my digital camera, will be overseas for 5 weeks so I anticipate taking a gazillion photos.

Should I get another card or just plan to download to CD at photo kiosks along the way?

What kind of resolution is your camera? Just as a guideline, for each "megapixel", it's about another 0.45 MB (roughly) so on a 1GB card you should be able to get: 2220 pix @ 1 MP, 1110 pix @ 2MP, 740 pix @ 3 MP, 550 pix @ 4 MP, 440 pix @ 5 MP, 370 pix @ 6 MP, and 310 pix @ 7 MP. (They just introduced a new 12.1 MP camera, too!)

Some cameras allow you to adjust the # of megapixels the camera uses... to allow you to scale down the "quality" while giving you more shots on a card.

Also if your camera supports it, if you are really in a pinch for space then go through the photos you've taken every couple of days and get rid of the bad ones.

I used fully 2 - 1 GB cards on a 25 day holiday using a 7 MP camera recently, and I have about 620 or so pictures.

Whatever you do, do not plan to buy an extra card abroad -- they are VERY expensive!

I use a 8 megapixel camera and get about 110 photos per 512 megabyte card. I take a tremendous number of photos on my trips, so I take along five cards and also a SuperDigibin, which is an external hard drive, to store my photos on. It is a small unit and I charge it every few nights on a trip. Then, when I get home, I upload the photos onto my computer. I find it very handy as I then do not have to worry about how many photos I am taking. I took a 30 gigabyte SuperDigibin on a 21 day trip to Italy and ran out of storage room on it on the last tour day. I now have an 80 gigabyte SuperDigibin. There are a number of external hard drives on the market other than the SuperDigibin. I've been told that you can also store your photos on an i-pod. I upload my photos every night in the order that I took them (per card used--I number my cards). This way it is easy to remember where I took the photos. Also, don't forget to bring along at least one extra battery and make sure that you are using an international battery charger. The SuperDigibin has its own international charger. The greatest thing about digital photography is the number of photos that you can take on a trip without worrying about the cost of developing film. If you don't bring enough cards or storage space, you are really defeating the advantage that you have using a digital camera.

We were on a 28 day trip. I had no problem finding photo shops in the larger cities where we spent 2 nights. I took two 256 cards and had them downloaded to CD when I found a convenient shop. It cost between 6 & 8 Euro and most of the time, they did the download while I waited - taking from 15 to 30 minutes or we'd leave them and go walking, eating, etc. and come back 3-4 hours later. In every case, they did let us see that the CDs did have the photos safely downloaded before we reformatted our cards.

Betty Lee; you did much better than I did. I was on a quickie tour where we were mainly in places for one day only. I must have gone to the wrong shops too.

We are bringing cards worth 5.5 GB. Our camera is 8MP. Plus we will have the flashtrax; it works like a hard drive so you can download the images into it. Its very small and very handy. We LOVE taking pics especially my husband. Its his first time in
Europe so Im expecting him to go thru that and some more. Smiler

Nakia...

Not knowing, as others memtioned, the megapixel rating of your camera, one can only guess.

My suggestion is to bring one or more extra cards and avoid the photo kiosks and what ever.
Memory cards are cheap!

For me, bringing a few teeny tiny memory cards, beats bringing storage gadgets or visiting photo shops abroad...pop it out; pop it in-you're done. Keep it simple! Smiler Happy Trails!

If you're taking along something like an iPod anyway (which I do), getting the memory card reader "add on" for that is a good idea. That allows you to use the iPod as a picture storage device.

Regards,

Chris

I also have an external reader/copier like many of you have mentioned, but it's another thing to haul around with cables, etc. Since memory is fairly cheap, unless you take pictures like fiend then just getting more memory cards is probably the more convenient way to go.

I think I would take a 2nd memory card, instead of planning to download pics along the way. The idea of wiping my memory card before making 2 back ups disks of my pictures, and saving them on my computer's hard drive bothers me! Memory has gotten so inexpensive that it isn't worth the risk or the hassle to me!

Thanks everyone Red Face

My camera is 5 megapixels. You have certainly given me something to think about. I'd never heard of Super Digibin before... Ive checked that out and that may be a good way to go. The cost of a 20Gb Digibin is about the same as another 1Gb CompactFlashCard.

I don't have an iPod and have no plans to get one as I can play music on my PocketPC (amongst many other things) ... for which I have a 1Gb SDCard.

Thanks again for the advice!
