Ok all you camera buffs
We are in need of a 'really good' P'N Shoot camera that we can slip into our pocket while walking around etc. This is not a money issue Just the 'best available' giving 'max' on 1. zoom capabilities 2. low light situations 3. ease of use etc etc All opinions welcome Next trip: Egypt/Jordan/Israel or Italy+ ??? ~ decisions, decisions...... |

Cottontail...
With the competition and the lower prices for the point & shoot cameras, just about any will do the job. Look for one on sale. Canon is a great brand for a digital camera. Things to consider: Number of Mega-pixels Higher zoom in actual zoom, not digital zoom. Image viewing "ONLY" on LCD screen or viewing on an LCD screen "OR" through a viewfinder (better in daylight). Size of LCD screen (Does it really matter?) Batteries used (AA or ?) Flash card used (SD is the one for P & S) |

Thanks Cats
This will be the only camera we take with us on our trips hence our wish to go to the max with capabilities. Yes - Canon is always great - one we liked the SX100 IS doesn't have a view finder and we are trying to decide if that's is an issue for us. We are in no rush ~ just trying to gather info so that we can make an informed decision Next trip: Egypt/Jordan/Israel or Italy+ ??? ~ decisions, decisions...... |

I like to travel light, also. My travel camera is an ultra-compact pocket digital, the Canon SD870IS...with 28mm wide angle ( my preferrence over bigger zoom ) with Image Stabilization to reduce/illiminate blur from camera movement in low lite. Today (sept 1) I just posted a collage of a few of the 4700 photos I took earlier this yr. in Europe.

Thanks for this recommendation We will look at its specs We will also have a think about your comments regarding zoom versus wide angle - something we hadn't thought about as we are camera novices Next trip: Egypt/Jordan/Israel or Italy+ ??? ~ decisions, decisions...... |

Cottontail ~ my advice to you is to do thorough research when buying a camera before travelling. Check out and compare the specs of the top 10's on the internet, read the reviews (pay attention to the pro's and con's listed in the reviews), visit a camera forum on the internet and ask the experienced photographers questions. I love my Sony Cybershot. I would recommend that you get a camera with the highest ISO setting available. I put mine on the highest setting and then I rarely use the flash at all. It takes great pictures inside places where no flash is allowed. I just leave it on this setting and I never have to fiddle around with the settings no matter where I am.

Xponent : The TZ5 was on our considering list but the reviews that I have read put me off. They stated that they are not brilliant in low light situations which is a key factor in churches etc where no flash is allowed. Have you had experience with them that this comment is perhaps a bit overstated ?? Thanks Next trip: Egypt/Jordan/Israel or Italy+ ??? ~ decisions, decisions...... |

Dalene : which is why I'm asking all the BB photography buffs for recommendations. They have (hopefully) used the cameras they are recommending for the same purpose that I will be Next trip: Egypt/Jordan/Israel or Italy+ ??? ~ decisions, decisions...... |

Cottontail ~ Nikon made a huge comeback in my country. There is strong competitiveness between Canon and Nikon users - (Merc vs BMW).
In the end it doesn't matter what camera you use but it matters but you can do with it. |

We have Sony Cybershot too. You're right, we have found a flash unnecessary more often than not. Really compact too. Wish we'd had it last year for our tour but the earlier model still did a good job. Like the way it looks for all the faces to focus on. |
