I'm going to try to post a few photos from my Best of Italy trip. Did it before with Dragons great "how to" and hope I can manage it again.
However.....there are 2 photos I would like to post, one of a member of our tour and one of a total stranger. Is there any way I can do something to their faces to make them unrecognizable? I don't like posting pictures without permission, maybe it's even illegal.
It's probably impossible, but there are some experts here on the BB who will be able to tell me for sure.
Thanks.

Do you have a photo editing program such as Photo Shop? You can isolate the area of the face (e.g. using magnetic lasso) and then apply a blur or Gaussian blur.

Or, you can use the Paint program that comes on PC computers and change the colour of your paint brush to something neutral and paint in that area of the photo.

ok, so it wasn't a dumb question just a dumb person asking it. I don't have Photo Shop. I do have my pictures in Picasa as well as the program that came with my camera called "Picture Project". Both have some edit capabilities but I couldn't figure out how to isolate just a small area or how to get from the paint brush program to Picasa.
Thanks anyway for the suggestions. It is nice to know that it isn't totally beyond the realm of possibility.

If you can find someone with some computer expertise, it would take a 1-hour lesson to teach you how to open the file and edit the picture in Paint and then import it back into Picasa.

It sounds overwhelming but isn't really that difficult. If you want, send me a private message and I'll go through it with you.

What I do when I want people in a shot and don't have time to get them to sign a release, I try to take pictures of them where their faces won't be recognizable. (e.g. wearing a hat with a big brim, back to camera, face in the shade) It's a shame that you can't post certain photos that you could otherwise share with us.

Your question wasn't stupid. If we don't ask, we don't learn!

Thanks ZeldaSue - I'll first check with my one son, he's pretty computer literate. In fact he once signed an email replying to a query of mine as "Mom's Tech Support System". It does seem workable.

The one picture of someone in our tour, I wanted of her (eating spaghetti with black squid) and I suppose I could even email her and ask. I did promise to email her the pic.
The other is of a perfect stranger wading in the flood waters in Venice. I had taken a bunch of shots but then when I wanted to take of my traveling companion my batteries died and I had left the spares in my carry-on. She did stand in the water patiently waiting while I dug in my purse looking for the spares but that was the extent of her good will. The picture of the stranger is exactly like the one I would have later taken had I been able.

Would you believe it? Mentioned all this to my daughter and she said, but we do have Photo Shop. It's really her computer that I use and I never knew it was there and she has never used it. So we went in and have been playing around with it. Can't seem to get it to blur the way I wanted, but I can get it to do somethings to block out the faces so will keep practicing. Very time-consuming and tiring.
Thanks loads for your help.

Come to think of it, IMHO people usually object to having their picture taken without permission, not posting them. The only exception would be if you post them to "objectionable" websites or if the person is under Witness Protection.

Posting an image of someone with their faces blurred doesn't make for good viewing. You are better off posting the image without them completely. It just feels odd looking at a pic of someone with their faces intentionally blurred. Takes the meaning out of posting the pic.

Just my 0.02.

Although I agree with this I do think that what L2T is doing is commendable.

There are 3 pics on the internet of me that I have found and this really annoys me. Not because of the sites that they are on but for me personally it feels like an invasion of my privacy. I am a very private person, and I hate having my photo taken.

L2T I'm sure once you do a few plays with Photoshop you will be able to blur the faces 'just a little' to make the face unidentifiable but 'not too much' that it will not detract from the photo.

Good luck Smiler

Sorry, its not my intention to hijack this thread for a tangential topic, but (promise my last post on this)...

I agree on the "commendable" part, however my point is more on the "not required" front.

In today's world, if one volunteers to have their picture taken in any social gathering (especially with people one has known for a very short duration), it is quite reasonable to assume the chances of that picture finding its way onto some photo sharing site, are VERY high.

I agree that some people are not comfortable with their pictures propping up on the web (for whatever reason) and one can request the photographer to not do so. But I feel that in this digital age, the onus should be on the subject to exclude themselves from the picture.

I am not sure it is always a matter of volunteering, e.g. if I am taking a photo of the Leaning Tower of Pisa & another tour member wanders into the shot, their image is captured without them volunteering.

I agree with Cottontail I think privacy should be, where possible, protected.

When I am aware a photo is being taken that I do not want to be included in I do nicely exclude myself, but how can you exclude yourself from a photo if you are unaware it is being taken, then later find yourself on the net.

If your photo is in Picasa - just right click it and select 'open with' paint or whatever - modify it and save it under a new name.
