Brenda C - That would be great except for it seems that I don't have permissions that include private messaging. Can you private message me and then I reply to you? |

Alas, you also don't have the permission to read PMs either. Here's his email: if you'll let me know when it's accessed, I'll delete it. This message has been edited. Last edited by: BrendaC, Travel is only glamorous in retrospect. Paul Theroux (1941 - ), in The Washington Post |

Hi, ZeldaSue, we purchaded a Cannon Ixus 960 IS.
It appears to have all that you are wanting. We are very pleased with the quality of photo and it is tiny and light weight. Life is better on a bike. |

Penny, I don't see that camera listed anywhere. Either it's not available in our area or it goes by another model name/number. Do you know what that might be? I actually prefer a larger camera to the tiny ones because arthritic fingers work better with larger controls. Does it have a viewfinder as well as the screen? |

The IXUS 960 IS is also known as Digital ELPH SD950 IS in some parts of the world.

So obviously, that would not be the camera for me because to start with, the optical zoom is only 4x and I'm looking for more than what I already have.
I'm checking out the Olympus SP560UZ which has 18x zoom. Unfortunately, it uses XD cards and AA batteries. Apparently, there are 2 schools of thought regarding power. Some people prefer the AA's and others prefer lithium ion. From what I've read, the XD cards are slower and in smaller gb sizes. |

Zelda...
Look at the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS with a 10X optical zoom or the Canon PowerShot S5 IS (12x optical zoom). |

On the XD memory cards, I would not purchase anything that uses them. The XD cards are not as popular as SD and CF cards. Stick to a camera that uses SD or CF. |

You may try one of Fuji's newer super zooms. Historically, Fuji started out using xD but of late they have been puling out of the xD bandwagon and their latest cameras sport the xD as well as the SD cards.

Thanks for the caution about cards.
I keep checking reviews on the cameras and keep coming back the the Canon S5 IS! Of course, much will depend on what happens with ebay auctions. I'll let you know how things "develop". |

Hi ZeldaSue, just a little reminder which I am sure you are aware of. When you have a >10 zoom camera and you are taking a photo using, for example, 300 mm focal length setting, it is advisable to take the photo using a tripod. I am definitely not able to take a sharp picture (even with IS or VR) hand holding the camera at 300 mm focal length setting.
A general rule in photography is that at 300 mm focal length, the shutter speed should be 1/300 second or faster. Hope this helps. |

Hi ZeldaSue
I bought the Canon S5IS last summer in preparation for my trip to Greece - I wanted the 12x digital zoom. I got some great pictures - but this is not what I would call a "small" camera. It is much heavier than my first digital - a Nikon Coolpix 3100, which fit easily into my pocket (and also took awesome pix). In order to get the digital zoom, it seems you need a much bigger and heavier camera (the zoom feature does give excellent results though). The Canon S5 also gives options for much more control of your pix - many settings and features. I continue to learn how to use it. Bottom line -- I am very pleased with the camera, but I have found it to be a bit heavy so it has taken me a while to get used to it. T |

Tully,
I have a Canon G6 now so am used to a weighty camera. It's not the weight in the hand that bothers me; it's the weight of a SLR kit on my shoulder for a full day of touring that would be uncomfortable. Justalex, Tripods are always a good idea. I've started taking a light-weight one with me so I'm always prepared for night shots and I have a monopod with me during the day. My next equipment purchase is going to be a pack mule! |
