Is a Nile cruise the best way to do Egypt?

With what we are going through here in Melbourne I can only say I am fed up with hot weather fortunately it is cooler tonight but it seems all the extreme hot weather brings is fire and dying trees.

Rita: we had 40 degrees celsius here yesterday and today we have bush fires.

I know, it is really a very bad time of year with Melbourne smothered in smoke. These arsonists should be jailed for life no question as most of the fires appear to be deliberately lit.

It's the only way to do Egypt, to my mind. Most tours start off with a few days in Cairo to see the museums, pyramids, etc, and then do the Nile cruise to see all the temples, etc, which are primarily along the banks of the Nile. The benefit is that you do most of your travel on the nice air-conditioned boat during the heat of the day, and most of the sightseeing in the cool of the early morning.

It really is an extremely "civilised" way to see Egypt!

Well, thanks All. Dec-Jan it is. I am a little bit crazy, but going in August does seem looney. I don't like hot weather in the US in August, so I am surely not up for even higher temps. I love living in New England because of its four season, though I am worried we will pay (cold spring/late summer, or a summer that is too hot or too cold) for the abnormally warm winter days we had last week.

p.s. I'll start comparing TT and Insight soon. When I did Greece and the four day cruise with Insight, it appeared that all the tours, even some of the budget tours, eventually ended up on the same cruise of the Greek islands. Is this about the same arrangement for the Nile cruise?

I think all the tours visit the same temples, the differences are the services from the ship. (e.g. meals, stateroom, entertainments, etc.)

Newsgirl,
The Egyptian Tours including the cruises with both TT & Insight are run by Spring Tours in Egypt, so when I was in Egypt with Insight there was a tour group of people from TT on the same cruise. The only difference I can see between TT and Insight is the hotels used in Cairo. With Insight I stayed at the Cairo Marriott, a very nice hotel. Insight also use the Conrad as well with some of their tours.

As a 'single' are you able to have single accommodation on the cruise and is the cabin outside or inside?. Your description does make it sound quite comfortable I have no plan at the moment but good to hear about your experience and thoughts re, 'civilized' way to do visit Egypt that is what is good re, feedback on the BB. I know from earlier posts that you favour In***** is that they way you went.

No, I went with a British tour operator, Th**** C**k, who specialise in Egyptian tours. There was a choice of cabins with them; I'm afraid I don't know what the situation with TT is. Perhaps someone who's been to Egypt with TT (Cat's?) could advise you.

Thankyou for your reply, 'TC' a very 'old' name in travel. If I go in the future it would not be with TT.

The oldest. It was Mr Cook who invented the whole idea of the "package holiday" in 1841!

Did that affect you in any way I think I would like that, quite an experience. By the way I saw that Oslo ski jump they kept watering it and doing the jump I enjoyed watching, I guess you saw it when it had snow. I was there in June 2006. Did you get to the Arctic Circle?

No snow when we were there Rita. Wrong time of the year.

We didn't cross the Arctic CIrcle in Scandinavia but we have crossed the Arctic Circle in Alaska and visited Kotzebue and Nome.

Considering we were at the Arctic Circle in Northern Europe in June last year although it was summer the attached photo of a tour member tells it all. I am not sure if the photo will come up.
