i had the same problem last year when flying from paris to toronto, canada.
My suggestion: in the airport (heathrow) they have a service that for L5 or so you can park your bags. right by there is the tube. take the tub into london.
what i did was visit hyde park, kensington palace and took tea at their orangerie. i had a ball. having walked all around hyde park and doing the full tour, i still had time to go back (via the tube) to the airport and do last minute shopping at the harrods outlet located there.
also, they have shower (if you can believe it) facilities there, so you can refresh yourself before the next leg of your journey.
with a little planning, you can squeeze in a couple of site during your stop over, so that the last day of your trip isn't just spent in the air.

Thanks to you both for replying. I was writing about Los Angeles, but many on the board were asking about London too. The London advise will be remembered for next trip. The side trip to the Getty museum sounds wonderful. I have read a lot about the place and watched a travel piece on it. I will spend some time looking it up again. Is it close to airport? Thanks again.
