I would like to welcome the many thousands of international youth visitors to our country.

World Youth Day (WYD) is the largest youth event in the world and will be held in Sydney from Tuesday 15 to Sunday 20 July 2008.

WYD08 will be the largest event Australia has ever hosted. It will attract over 125,000 international visitors - more than the 2000 Olympics.

WYD08 will mark the first visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Australia.

Through the WYD08 experience, young people from throughout the world will make a pilgrimage in faith, meet, and experience the love of God.

I hope all these young people (and some older people) really enjoy themselves while they are in Australia and hopefully one day will want to return to do a Trafalgar tour. Wink

The Pope Mobile is a funny little thing. I actually stood within a metre or so of the Pope once - he was behind glass of course in his vehicle - but he gave me a wink and a smile. I think it seemed odd to him too. He just cut across a corner and I happened to be standing there.

Sue ~ I attended a welcoming of pilgrims from East Timor to our parish last night, we had a welcome Mass said by the Archbishop of Adelaide, our parish priest and an Australian priest stationed in East Timor.

The East Timorese have never been on a plane before or out of their own area, what a beautiful bunch of people they are so humble and uplifting, during Mass they all broke into song, my skin prickled and I had tears in my eyes, it was so inspiring.

Sue ~ Are your young pilgrims only going to Sydney?

Missie, hope they have some warm woolies to put on for the trip to the hills you have planned. I'm frozen right now, hate winter but we need the rain just hope it is late at night so it doesn't spoil their fun in Adelaide. Hope Sydney does us proud and they all want to come back and TT to other parts. It will be a nice "taste" and inspiring time I am sure for all.

Aussiebird ~ Sydney's daytime temps are usually a few degrees warmer than Adelaide and I know they will put on good weather for the Pope and the Pilgrims. Smiler

Seeing these many thousands of pilgrims walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be a sight to behold. Smiler

I don't know, Middie, but if I find out I will let you know. I don't have teens at home anymore, so I am out of that lope.

There was a small article in our local paper yesterday reporting that a group of 39 are going from Harrisburg, PA (our state capital, about 50 miles from me) to the WYD.
Thanks to Missie, I knew what they were talking about. It sounds like a wonderful thing for the young people.

Sue ~ I am sure where ever your pilgrims end up they will be well looked after, I know in my own parish people have opened their homes to make them all welcome, it is heart warming to see such community spirit. Smiler

We are experiencing a few problems with some pilgrims arriving in Adelaide. They have booked their flights into Adelaide then out of Sydney thinking that Adelaide is a suburb of Sydney. There has been a mad scramble to raise money to purchase airline tickets to get these people to Sydney for the main event next week.

I hope your group from Harrisburg experience all the love and joy that WYD brings. Smiler

Hello Dot,
it is cold in Sydney today, 13 degrees at the moment (56F).

Here's a link for weather in Australia, if you would like to see what is happening each day.

http://mirror.bom.gov.au/weather/radar/

If you click on Sydney and then click on "weather observations" (it is below the map) you will see the temperature. This is updated every 10 minutes.
