Hi Saint Mike Without being too paranoid patting your wallet is a dead give away as to where it is. I usually,in large crowds, keep my hand on my wallet which is in my side pocket. Of course when we travel we use money belts which solve the problem. |

Most of these kind of thefts happen at domestic airports where the thieves walk through into the waiting areas after grabbing there stolen goods & walk right back out again. If this is happening there usually is a group of them to enable them to pass the goods onto another, then another. If it was international yes they would have to have a boarding pass. |

Hi Bio Good point always good to let the newbies know of these things we take for granted. Cheers Spooky |

Agree BT - I don't actually walk down the street tapping my pocket like some sort of demented busker. I surreptitiously (good word that ...) tap it in a nonchalant way. But you're right - constantly checking your money is not an advisable thing - you never count your money when you're sitting at the table ... I don't use a money belt. I find they are annoying and I've never really had a need. I have my wallet and often some spare cash in my breast pocket. Then my wife always has her bag ... Mike Take the Road Less Travelled |

Hi Spooky
Thanks for your support. I thought that it was worth mentioning just to make us more aware. |

Hi Saint Mike A "demented busker". We only use a money belt when we are travelling to Europe. |

We were sitting on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice and the young pickpockets leaning against the railing and scrutinizing every tourist walking past were as conspicuous as boils on a babys bum. However, two young males walked past, one with a bulging wallwt half out of the back pocket of his jeans. Two pickpockets wheeled off the railing and whilst one bumped the victim the other swooped on the wallet. They both sprinted down the footpath with one holding the wallet high in the air. They were both whooping loudly as they ran ( I would have expected it to have been a silent operation) The victim and his mate gave chase but others came off the railing and ran interference for the thieves. They then jogged off in the same direction. obviously for their cut.
They were just as conspicuous outside the Vienna Historical Museum, but several policemen lounging nearby and watching them were obviously causing them some frustration from their actions and grumbling. |

I know it is an awful way to be but in this age I trust no one anywhere so always vigilant. Years of travel has helped but when you are tired it is easy to let down the guard. Some one once commented on how awful that I didn't trust anyone. I'm afraid I feel no guilt just pleasant surprise when people are more than honest. Our lost credit card fraud ($ 6000 Aust )in Hong Kong from our trip in Sept has just been sorted out so my feelings confirmed about not trusting people.
