I think you need an Aussie to explain that D. They are the best (I'm told) at the Rugby codes.

Maybe Dalene means: What do the Maori words mean?

All Blacks Haka

The Te Rauparaha Haka:

Before the Haka is performed by the team, the Haka leader, normally an All Black of Maori descent, will instigate the Haka and spur on those who are to perform the Haka with the following.

Ringa pakia
Uma tiraha
Turi whatia
Hope whai ake
Waewae takahia kia kino

English Translation:
Slap the hands against the thighs
Puff out the chest
Bend the knees
Let the hip follow
Stamp the feet as hard as you can.

Ka Mate! Ka Mate!
Ka Ora! Ka Ora!
Tenei te ta ngata puhuru huru
Nana nei i tiki mai
Whakawhiti te ra
A upane ka upane!
A upane kaupane whiti te ra!
Hi!!

English Translation:
It is death! It is death!
It is life! It is life!
This is the hairy person
Who caused the sun to shine
Keep abreast! Keep abreast
The rank! Hold fast!
Into the sun that shines!

Kia ora, NZ Nurse. It's a bit difficult to rub noses over the internet and I have left a smudge on my computer screen trying. Smiler

Yes, I knew that the words were probably from the Haka and I wanted the translation. Thank you, Penny1. My husband and I enjoyed this and I'll share with my friends. Always nice to learn something new from another country's culture. I never miss the Haka before an All Blacks-match. Very exciting.

Thank you Jeanette ~ is this correct that it was the first time in a 100 years that the All Blacks were beaten in Dunedin? Which makes it quite a historical win for the Springboks.

Apparently so Dalene. Great game and I loved your coach's reaction at the end! Bet the result was a relief to your captain too. Ka pai (well done) Springboks!

As for the haka, it is always an inspiring moment and personally I much prefer the original to the new one they came up with but then I like tradition Smiler

Thank you Augusta. Yes, I was particularly happy for our new coach because there was a lot to say in my country when he was appointed. (We have bad rugby-politics here). Smiler
