Going through my travel magazine I discovered this article with the names of the best gelaterias in Rome:
Il Gelato di San Crispino, original shop at the Basilica of San Giovanni (56 Via Acaia) and a branch near the Trevi Fountain: 42 Via della Panetteria. "Corbezzolo" is the signature flavor, wild strawberry tree honey from Sardinia. For chocolate, they suggest Tre Scalini , at Piazza Navonna (30-35 Piazza Navonna) they serve the best "tartufo". I hope this helps some of the lucky people traveling in the next few weeks. Buon appetito! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Californian, |

Oh no, you've done it now Californian. Guess what I am craving!?
I went to the one near the Trevi Fountain and because I was asking for the Gelato in Italian the man that served me actually gave me one scoop for free. |

The best gelato I've ever had was not in Rome but in San Gimignano in Tuscany. However, gelato is great all over Italy. France has great gelato as well.

I have eaten gelato at the Trevi & one of our TD's took us for gelato at the Piazza Navonna. I wandered around the piazza enjoying the gelato & found a wonderful painting from a street vendor that I just had to have.Every time I look at that painting I can just about taste the gelato. The gelato was heaven on a stick! Bliss!!

Limone is my personal favourite... tried it at the little shop near the Trevi.. but the best was in Siena... the sign outside the shop was 'made fresh every day' ... huge scoop and yummy

Gelato, Ice Cream, it didn't matter which to my husband. On our first tour to Europe in 2005, he made a point of having one every day on our 31 day tour. His excuse was that it was so hot! It was, but every day? By the time we got home after 9 weeks away, he had put on 3 kgs and had to work hard at the gym to work it off. He learnt his lesson, and only had a treat a few times on the next trip. Why is it that treats have to be fattening? Perhaps if they called them less enticing names like "lard a..." or "big b.." we would not be tempted.

We tried the Truffle icecream at Piazza Navone. Yummy.
The loveliest cool food we had in Europe was a cup of crushed ice with lemon squeezed over it from a stall outside the entrance at Pompeii...yummy. We had another of these down by the beach on the Isle of Capri.... delicious and thirst quenching on a hot day. Life is better on a bike. |

So did I, very cooling and refreshing.
Also had one outside the gates of Pompeii. I did have gelato twice and it was very good, but I am not a big fan of gelato or ice cream. Somehow that doesn't make me any thinner. "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page." St. Augustine. |

Memories, how I did Italy the Gelato way!!!! The Trevi & The Pantheon & the & the & the.
The one at the Pantheon sticks in my mind as the best, I love at least 2/3 flavours at once, it's the way I am used to in Oz. |
