I was part of the Angola/South-West guerilla war in 1975-1989 and my oldest son was born in a war zone in the far north. I was lifted with my newborn-baby from the military hospital to a safer zone (an underground bunker) because of a massive attack from enemy forces. I for one book coach tours like the TT in June this year to get away from the trauma and the stress of our everyday lives. I want to relax and enjoy my tour for at least a week or two without having to think about our problems back home therefore I consider it as inappropriate when strangers ask me sensitive questions about my country - especially when their intent is questionable. Dalene ~ I second Brenda's thanks to you. The insight you give us does go some way in helping us to understand. I say some way because I guess unless you live it you really can't feel it all.

Had you not taken the time to explain all this I may have been one to commit the social gaff of asking too many questions. Like Brenda I am genuinely interested but would hate to cause hurt because of that interest. Frowner

Jo,
For the males in the group, me thinks it fell into the "wishful thinking" category. Wink

BTW. How's the new system working out. No need "to borrow the jack," I suppose.

No, Dalene, I didn't get your PM. I wonder what happened. If you still have it, could you pls send it again?

Meanwhile, I'm PMing you now.

Dimpz, Mallee, Brenda ~ no sweat - it's just that South Africa's situation is incredibly complex and that one really needs to be an expert to answer questions. I assure you that not all South African's are as morbidly depressed as I am - for example Rex: I really enjoy her positive, edifying and humorous outlook on life. D. Smiler

One thing I've learnt, Dalene, is that what the rest of the world sees via the media is not the whole story. I have met a lot of Sth Africans and if they were to bring up the subject of politics etc then that is one thing but to make fellow tour members feel uncomfortable is unfair and I'm sorry you experienced that. Some topics are better kept off tour. I know I wouldn't want to risk alienating people I had to spend days or weeks with.
BTW I don't think you come across as morbidly depressed but as someone who loves her country and people very much. Your sense of national pride impresses me. Smiler

Augusta ~ here I go again - patriotism - an unimaginable concept to me.
Seneca said "men loved their country, not because it is great, but because it is their own."
My generation of white South Africans have risked and lost our lives to defend what we wrongly perceived to be right about the country; while the black South Africans similarly did the same but to fight against what they knew to be unjust about their country. Ironically both were driven by the common love for their country. Complex? Big Grin

Won't answer all the time.As i have grown up on the farm with mostly black friends ,from which some are still friends.I am looking at the whole structure from another point of view. Not only from the top structure down, but from the ordinary people up to the top an that form a different picture. Nice to see you back, Rex. Sorry you've had a stressful week. Hope it wasn't the rugby or all of us waiting for part 2 Wink. Don't worry, it took me 8 months to write mine! Seriously though, I hope all is well. Smiler
