travellor & et al ~ I have been watching & thoroughly enjoying a series from cable TV called "Francesco's Italy". He (Francesco) is a Venetian who travels Italy in the making of this travelogue. Very enjoyable. Smiler

Travellor - you said
"PS The gondola experience by myself...I hired a gondola so I could photograph. The gondolier sang to me and it was the best of times!! Now that could really be seen as cheesy!!"

That's absolutely sweet! It's chocolate, not cheese at all!

Just thought I should get something straight Smiler(I know no one has said anything) but when I reread my previous post I didn't think that I was as articulate as I could be, probably because I was stealing a couple of minutes while at work! Eeker. We have already decided to do the gondola option and to be honest, I didn't want to be the first to denigrate the quality of the videos, which for the most part have found interesting. I can't wait to see those canals from the perspective of the gondolas!
My own reason for disliking this video is probably due to it being a shock. For me it was mainly all the clapping that drove me mad Mad. Ialso hate accordion music!I didn't think that the gondolas would ever leave!
I suppose I had a romatic notion of the gondolas in that it would be a stately glide through the canals, you know, very serene and relaxing, after all this is Venice known for romance!
(yes, I know Frowner that the gondola rides are not the romantic things that we are led to believe they are, but they should (IMO) give the allusion; relaxing with a nice mellow Italian song in the background.... oh well (sigh).)

I don't think so, but I haven't seen them all yet.

Jewel ~ If you have chosen to do the gondola thing then that is good - for you. I would never criticise anyone for choosing to ride in a gondola, it is just, for me, not something I choose to do. If you need to do it then you go girl it is, after all, you trip & you should not feel the need to explain or justify. Cool

I love Venice & only need to see a photo of it to go dreamy eyed. Wandering away into the back streets & being amazed at the absolute quiet is a great thing to do, sitting in Piazza San Marco, having a coffee & watching the passing parade, or visiting Burano, I can't think of anything I don't like about Madam Venezia. So I have no hope of verbalising my own personal shunning of the gondola.

Videos - now go figure? Why have we been treated to such an average lot of viewing. The photos submitted by our own TT members are, IMO, of a far more representative standard.

Hi everyone

The videos that are placed here have been submitted by past passengers and placed on Youtube.

With video cameras becoming far smaller, cheaper and easier to use, we hope to receive more video footage to post on the boards. This is just to start the ball rolling. Hopefully, people will remember to post their own videos when they return so that they can share their experience with their fellow passengers.

I look forward to seeing your video's Smiler

Kind Regards

I have taken the gondola rides four times, and I hope to do it again in August. Every time has been memorable because of the company...first time my elderly aunt, then my grand children, my best friend, not at all cheesy in my opinion. Never took a video, but I have great pictures.

Hi Jewel,

Don't loose faith in the romance of the gondola rides...

There is a place near Rialto where I often sit with friends at dusk. We are perched alongside the Grand Canal and frequently see gondolas gliding past as night falls. Then, when it is dark, a small light will be seen on the water. This is the (rather dim) light all gondolas have on the front of the craft. It is quiet, the night has fallen, and there is almost no sound. The gondola's passengers most commonly are couples and they have found the romance of Venice in a gondola. So it does exist...and it ~I would think~ would be very special indeed.

best wishes,
travellor

On the Gondola ride, is when I had my "moment"..Course I'll repeat this in my tour tale, but there we were, going down a side canal, very peaceful and quiet, and the accordian was playing Santa Lucia in the background - on another gondola. It was so beautiful - at that moment, it was like "I'M Really HERE"...and I cried! And cried!!!

Californian and Travellor ~ Thank you for restoring my faith in gondolas Smiler
Dimpz ~ being able to share our personal thoughts about travel is what this BB is all about and the reason I love sneaking on so often. The world would truly be a boring place indeed if we all liked the same things ! Frowner
Who knows, maybe you love accordion music? Big Grin

Lizzy615~ Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I am so excited about this trip and being able to finally see all the beautiful and historical things that there are, that I think I will spend more than half my time crying my eyes out Red Face

Cheers

Hi travellor,

On one of our recent trips to Venice a young guy on our tour proposed to his girlfriend in the Gondola. She was very surprised and said "YES" .... and was busy showing us all the ring over dinner that night.
