The status of the Vatican and its relationship with Italy was established by the Laterine Treaty with Mussolini.

The Vatican not only has it's own stamps but the best postal service on the peninsula-if you are going to mail home, even post cards, send them from the Vatican.

Liechtenstein also has neat stamps. I remember them from when I collected stamps as a kid. The principality operates under Swiss banking laws but their secrecy has not been breached like the Swiss.
