I am considering booking a river cruise in June/July next year for my husband and myself with our 11 year old son.
Our son is a good little traveller, however we have always travelled independently and this will be a new experience for us.
Does anyone have any comments on : how children are received on this type of holiday , : what the triple cabin arrangements are like and if there is anything in particular that we should be aware of when making the booking?

No expert here, Julia, but I would think an eleven year old would simply love a river cruise and be endlessly fascinated at the changing scenes. As to how he would be received, all I can say from reading a great deal of discussion oin this site is, that he will be received as he behaves. You know your own child, his tolerance levels, and his frustrations. Only you can make that decision, really, about what kind of a trip it will be. Several people on this forum have travelled with their kids and all had wonderful times and memories.

Can't answer the questions about triple rooms but why not get your agent to make further inquiries for you, such as which ship, how large the rooms are etc. to give you a better idea. Then, you can perhaps look up the specifications on the shipping companies website.

Hope this works out for you, Julia, and welcome to the site by the way.

Julia I would check with the various river cruise companies. Some of the companies have a set policy that children under a certain age are not welcome. I believe triple rooms are very difficult to come by on river cruises as well. The cruise lines that I have been looking at do not have triple rooms.

Thanks to both Brenda and Midlife Traveller.
I will take your advice on the cabin configuration before I proceed any further. I would hate to become any more enthusiastic about the cruise only to find out that the three of us as a group is not an option.
