I'm looking for someone who has already been on either the Paris Normandy or Burgundy Provence river cruise.....I can't decide which one to take, and whether to take it in the spring or in the late fall....any recommendations?

Lynette,

Thanks for this, we have been looking for something to do before the Insight BB tour and The Grand Francelooks as though it could be ideal.

Lynette & John, Thanks for the suggestion, but due to $ restrictions I must make a decision to pick one over the other, that's why I asked the question.

Hi Y'all,
Well, we did it, made the decision to do the Burgundy/Provence down river cruise on the River Royale with the pre tour in Paris for 4 days.

What a wonderful time we had, except it was too short.Paris in the sprintime was a bit damp...rained part of every day, but that did not stop us from trying to do it all.

Unfortunately, due to spring flooding, the part of the cruise to take place on the Soane was cancelled and we were bused to Lyon instead. Too bad we had to spend the good part of a day on a bus, but Christian the tour manager was very informative.

The River Royale is a new ship and it shows. Crew/staff were delightful and we could not have asked for a better vacation.

Hello RitaBob, We were on the River Royale from 6.4.2008 to 13.4.2008. What date were you there. We also had a ball. The boat was beautiful and the crew great. The Hotel Manager, Eric, is one of the most professional people I have ever observed. Yes the weather was wet but it didn't matter. We did not experience any problems with flooding through and embarked at Chalon-Sur-Saone.

We also did the Paris to Normanady cruise first. This was also great but the River Baroness had a few problems. We were the first cruise of the season and the boat is much older. I loved the destinations but doubt I would go on the Baroness again. The crew once again were magnificent. Our Cruise Manager on both cruises was A.J. He was fantasic.

hi Lynette and John
We were on the River Royal fron the 20th of April until the 27th. I think it was the 17th when transportation on the Soane was stopped. Doesn't matter, it was out of our control. They did bus us to Beaune so we would not miss too much, but as I said before it resulted in spending too much time on busses instead of the boat. The weather improved every day and the mistral winds kept the air clear and fresh. The day in the olive groves sitting under he trees drinking wine and nibbling was enchanting. I recommend this trip highly.
Our tour manger was Christian Basel who had an interesting take on the French as a culture, and the day we left the boat he was on his way home for a vacation. I don't think the crew/staff ever sleep, so going home for vacation is looked forward to with great anticipation!

Hi Lynette & Rob
Just reading with interest your comments on the Paris to Normandy Cruise. We are thinking of doing the same cruise in June 2009 but as this will be our first cruise we are not sure if we are suited to this sort of trip. Perhaps you can tell me a bit more about your experience on this cruise and whether you would do it again. How formal is it in the evening? Do you need to wear collar and tie to dinner? We are quite relaxed travellers and tend to dress down when on tour. Does the trip allow plenty of time ashore and what did you think of the arranged day trips? One of the reasons we were looking at this trip is we wanted to visit the Normandy area - does this trip give you enough time in this area in your opinion?
What was the food and accommodation like?
We would really appreciate any input you can provide to help with our decision.
Thanks
Anne & Trev - Sydney

Hello Trev & Anne

We did a long (29days) River Cruise down the Danube last year, the 2 French River Cruises this year and have already booked another for next year (Legendary Rhine & Moselle). I can certainly tell you that River Cruises ARE the way to go. We just love them. Dress is whatever you like through the day and smart casual at night (a bit dressier on Captain's Welcome & Farewell dinners) but everyone dresses how they want to basically. The shore tours are fab. They will very often only last a couple of hours then the rest of the time is for you to explore on your own. Don't worry there is plenty of time to do your own thing. Yes, Normandy was a real hightlight. Well worth it with plenty of time on your own as well. We were each given a late verteran's name and cemetery address the day before and we were met there by an official with flowers for each of us to place on that particular persons grave (we had to find it ourselves with the address we were given...but help was there if we needed it). Even though the Aussies were not involved with D-Day landings we still found it very moving. We are also going back there next year on an Insight coach tour (Normandy, Brittany & the Loire Valley). The food on the boats is always excellent (take elastic waist pants cos you'll need em). As I said River Cruising is a great way to see Europe. You'll be hooked after you've done one.

Hello Trev & Anne -

Just returned from the Paris & Normandy tour - and it was amazing. We were prepared for a "relaxed" cruise - but it was quite busy... Something to do every morning - so no time to sleep in!!!

Our cruise manager arranged a side tour of Juno Beach for a few of us who wished to see where the Canadians landed - very much appreciated.

This was our 1st river cruise & I would do it again. There was one glitch with the River Baroness (a breakdown with the hot water heater for a few hours) but everyone took it in stride - and we all coped with luke warm showers. It was not enough to deter me from taking this boat again... The crew was absolutely amazing - and the cruise manager phenomenal.

Fran

P.S. Christian was our cruise manager as well - and he informed us that he is retiring in 3 weeks. Too bad - he always had +++ tips/insights to share.

Hello Trev & Anne

Was really amazed to hear about the hot water on the Baroness as this is the exact problem we had.....they assured us it was fixed now.

All that aside River Cruising is definitely the way to go. We do one every year and just love it. I knew you would too. Great feed back. When's the next one? If it were me I'd do the Bucharest to Amsterdam (River Danube). THE best river cruise ever.

Hi - we're booked on the River Baroness Paris/Normandy cruise for 24th May next year and would love to know more about your experiences and if you booked pre-cruise two nights in Paris. Have done several cruises but this is our first river cruise and looking forward to it.

Hi Westaussie -

We did not do the pre-booked, but those that did were not really enthusiastic about the experience. We opted to extend 2 extra days on our own - and really enjoyed that. We stayed in the Latin Quarter - so took a taxi to our hotel after the cruise, and then had to make our own way to the airport 2 days later. This worked great for us.

My only suggestion - try to arrive fairly early in the day - you can access the boat, and then relax until it sails. There is a "welcome" lunch buffet in the lounge, so food is not an issue. Sort of wished we had arrived a bit earlier (we arrived at 1 pm) - but still had some time to relax before we set sail. The benefit of doing the TT pre-sail package is that you are provided transportation to the ship - the same as if you come directly from the airport.

You will love the trip - it was an amazing experience.

Fran
