I have just received my broucher on the River Cruises and I like what I see. Has any one done any of the cruises. What are the cabins like and the food. When you order your wine, beer or soft drink do they have a credit card system that you pay at the end of your cruise. Do they offer you optionals. I like the cruise that takes you from Prague and to Romania and Bulgaria.

Hi Haze,

I also picked up a brochure on River cruises today, not Trafalgar but I just want to compare to see what is available before I make any decisions.

I have been on two river boat cruises and as far as I am concerned, this is the only way to travel. As was pointed out this is the first year of TT having such tours. Obviously, I went with a different company. Anyway, the first cruise went from Vienna to Amsterdam and the second went from Basel to Antwerp. On both cruises the staterooms were larger than what I usually have had on ocean cruises. The food was outstanding and on both cruises, wine was served with the dinner. The system to buy drinks other than at dinner was to sign for them - you paid up at the end of the cruise. Both cruises were two weeks long. The river cruises have absolutly spoiled me - I no longer want to go on a huge mega liner and be one of thousands on the ship. The river boats hold about 140 people. Included on both cruises were city tours of the places we docked. There were optionals which were just that...optional. I have booked another trip that includes a river boat cruise on the Danube from Constanza, Romania (on the Black Sea) to Budapest. That is scheduled for November of this year. I can't wait!!!!

Didn't they run last year? I seem to recall that they were new for last year, weren't they?

Chris M. I really think that they are brand new for this year for Trafalgar. I don't remember any discussions on the subject until this year and my TA stated they were new for 2006.

It does sound like a pleasant change of pace for a tour.

Hi HT,

See this thread from Nov 2004:

http://trafbb.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/454104/m/41810572/r/41810572#41810572

I don't recall hearing from anyone who actually went on one last year, but there was certainly a brochure for them last year!

The brochure was out for 2005 departures. I remember quite a few discussions about river cruising, lots of members offered their services as product testers! Smiler

If it was decided that a river cruise was the way to go for the TTBB tour I would be thrilled. Smiler

Thanks NyJudy for all your information. do they offer a lot of optionals or just a few . I know its your choice if you want to do them but I hate missing out on anything but that bumps up the price too. The tour that you mentioned that you are doing later on in the year is the one I am interested in doing. I have covered quite a bit of Eastern Europe and this criuse is just ideal.

Missie what a great idea I think a River Cruise would be great for the TTBB

And I 'd be very jealous, because TTBB tour doesn't fit into our program for the next three years or so. Frowner

I have heard that the typical cruise ship either has no single cabins, or they are even worse than the single rooms described in the thread that discusses that topic.
I think a river cruise would be a great way to see Europe, since you wouldn't always be changing hotels, and there would be no long days on the bus. But I have yet to read a brochure from Trafalgar or anybody else that describes the single accomodations, or says what the supplement is. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Hi Bob H

It looks like there are no single cabins on the European river cruises so that would mean you would have to pay extra unless you can find some one to go with you.

As far as I remember, the same situation is with Greek cruises. See TT brochure for details.
Unless it changed, single supplement doesn't apply, which I interpret that cruise means cabin-sharing or paying double.
