I am seriously considering taking a River Cruise next year after seeing the Trafalgar promotional DVD. Only problem is the age of passengers looks alot older than me. Can anyone throw some light on this subject for me please

Comments that I have heard from others is that most people are late fifties and up. We are looking at doing a river cruise next year but will have to wait and see.

We've had a wide diversity in the ages of our fellow passengers; from children about 10 to those in I think their 80's. We all got on extremely well.

Don't worry about any age difference; enjoy yourself and I am sure your enthusiasm over the trip will rub off on everyone else.

I do like the sound of it - and it would be great not to have to pack and move everyday or every second day

My experience of river cruising (not with TT) is that they attract a significantly older age group than coach tours. Generally aged 60+ was my experience.

I think, Lyane, that river cruises attract a completely different market than coach tours, so your experience of the age range on a coach tour is not necessarily at all representative of what one might find on a river cruise.

Chris, which rivers have your cruised? Which ones do you think are the best to start with? The idea of not having to pack each day keeps getting more appealing and we are tired of the big cruise ships and looking for something more intimate and manageable.

The one I did, a few years ago, was a cruise on the Rhone in France, from Lyon down to Marseille.

The most popular ones by far are the Rhine and the Danube.

I'd love to do more but, as a single traveller, river cruises are extremely expensive, due to the very very high single supplement.

Chris Did you spend much time on the ship? Was there winery tours with that particular cruise?

Like most river cruises, ours was "full board", so all meals were provided. Most days there were excursions both morning and afternoon, and you could either do them or stay on the boat. Some places, like Arles, the boat was actually moored in the middle of the town, so you could wander around by yourself. Other places, the excursion left the boat in one place, the boat went on, and the coach brought you back to the new location of the boat.

Heavens - don't let something as unimportant as age put you off river cruises if that's what you want to do; I think they're great. If I could afford to, I'd do more in an instant!
