Think I might buy an Afrikaans-English dictionary. Worried I'm missing out the juicy bits |

Augusta: When I remarked earlier that I had married an Afrikaner, Rex replied: "Caitie jou stoute kabouter. Jy het ook die lekker vleis gekies, which, loosely translated means "Caitie you naughty elf. You also chose the (tasty chunk of) meat."

"Caitie you naughty elf"...
Q: Is that good or bad? |

Cat's: It's a term usually said affectionately. You naughty little leprechaun, you naughty little thing...the way we might say you little monkey.

Rex: My man is nie fris en stoere boere nie. Hy is baie aktief en soos Lance Armstrong gebou, lank en rietskraal met sterk seeninge. Translation: My husband isn't a big strong farmer type. He is very active (cycling) and built like Lance Armstrong - tall and lanky and sinewy. He is perpetual motion. Don't know how to say that in Afrikaans. |

Just to say that the meaning of "fris"~ a strong and healthy person."Stoere Boere" means~ he is from true boer-blood through and through. The real thing.

Thanks for the translations, ladies! Now, how on earth am I going to remember all these words? I'm trying to, and learn a few basic phrases in Malay. (Yes Sabah, here I come in 2009!!!) I did try once to learn a few basic phrases in Dutch, but found that I was too old to learn how to pronounce them. (Cough, choke, splutter. |
