They are terrific Jeannie. We take ours all over the place now, most recently Sydney.

We have a couple of businesses that we can leave when we take a holiday but we can't just forget them.... the Asus allows us to watch what is happening. Prior to this we relied on phone calls.

Our daughter also took hers to Thailand a couple of weeks ago and she was able to use skype to talk to her little boy, who was staying here with us. He loved seeing his mum each day over the computer.

Ours is about to go on a very long bicycle ride with us next week. That will be a real test as to how convenient and shock proof they are. One of the sales pitches for them is that the hard drive is inbuilt (or something) and thus can absorb a lot more shock.

Life is better on a bike.

definately worth taking one, I'm looking at the ASUS Eee PC 900 with a 12GB flash drive which would cope with all the photos one could take (plus ability to use wired or wireless networks) but as Tony54 suggests wait till the last moment prices will come down

This is exactly the model I was looking at. I have seen it for $480.00. It is teeny-tiny, so tiny that it would fit in my handbag, and it weighs next to nothing. The changer, which is also very light has the same fitting that my Cannon camera uses, so I could use the same cord for both. It also works on wireless internet which is another bonus.

I know that I can buy large memory cards for the camera but I find that I can't see the photo's properly on the tiny camera screen so thought If I were able to download on to one of these the screen is a bit bigger for viewing. I can also use it to write my journal as I go. I am not one for putting pen to paper, guess I have become lazy in that way, I am a secretary, I am used to typing everything up.

If I were able to get internet anywhere, I could contact my family using Skype which is much cheaper than a phone call and these also the ASUS Eee PC 900 also has an inbuilt camera so my family will be able to see me while I talk to them.

I have three more weeks to go, so will think on it a bit more before making a rash decision. It is certainly very tempting.

Thanks for the input
JDee

Exactly my thoughts. I will probably wait until just before our next trip as technology keeps changing and I might as well get the latest.

Hi everyone
I have been reading your comments/advice and talking to the tech guys where I work, who say go for it, these things are cheap and cheerful and do the job.

I am however still going to wait until the weekend to think about it. I mean, whether I really need it or whether being able to download my pictures, email my family, talk on skype to my grandkids, write my journal etc are worth $480.00 and the extra space, even though it is only tiny. (I am thinking an extra pair of shoes - you have to know me - think Sarah Jessica Parker).

I do have a laptop already so purchasing this for this trip (and likely others) would be an extravagance.

St Mike, thanks for the link from which I was able to gather more info. It certainly has given me food for thought. Being able to use the mobile phone to send the emails where hotel internet was not available was interesting, I am checking this out too.

Thanks to everyone, I will let you know what I decide at the end of the week. Right now, I kind of think right that I might be called extravagant!! I could never be called rash!! Cool

Now I do know that I have 20 sleeps to my trip to the Riviera and then on to Italia. Wink

I have had the ASUS EEE PC 900 12gb for about a month now and love it. Just keep it plugged in by the couch so it's always available when I think I need to do something. I will be bringing it with me on my Insight tour of Germany next week so I will come back and tell how it went. Good to know Penny1 has been having good luck. I bought the Garmin Mobile PC GPS program that comes with North America Maps and the Europe maps add on, so it will be interesting to see if I can use it in the hotels to tell me where we are and if there is anything interesting to see that is close. I have strapped it in my car and used it as a driving GPS already. The 900 only has about 3 hours battery life, they are making a 901 that has 6 hours battery life, but of course it is more expensive so you may want to research both before you make a final decision. I also signed up for Skype and hope to use it to contact my friends who are watching my dogs. If you have any questions about it let me know.

Greetings

I have decided that I am going to go ahead and buy an ASUS eee PC 900. I am convinced that it is not too bulky and that I will find it useful, even if it is only to type up my journal and look at my pictures. I will download the photo's of my grandkids and family on to it before I leave.

I became a Nanna again yesterday with the birth of my fifth grandchild. A gorgeous little boy who is named Austin.

When I return, I will let you all know if it was worth it!!!

thanks again for all your comments.

JDee

My grandchildren all happened very quickly!!

I have five, aged three and under. Three boys and two girls. Two born this year, so you can imagine how busy it is when they all visit together.

They give me so much pleasure, the downside is my Christmas shopping list has gotten much more expensive!! But they are definately worth it. Wink

Definately agree about Grandchildren being the best thing that can happen to you.

But even better, if you are lucky enough to become a Great Grandparent like my Mum and Dad.

Four years ago, my mum was ready to throw in the towel, she suffers terribly from athritis, but since the first Great grandchild came along she has had a new lease of life. Definately has put a new perspective on her life. You should see her now she is Great Grandmother to five and loves it. How lucky is she !! I really do hope I get to experience Great Grandchildren.

JDee. there's nothing to compare with the experience of grandchildren. I have six and we are expecting--p.g.--a seventh.

My teenage children were blessed to have had their great gran in their lives until 2 years ago. They adored her and she was amazing with them. I often used to send one of them to stay with her for a week and she spoilt them rotten. I look at all the other great grandkids being born into the family now and it makes me sad they will never know her. She was my husbands grandmother but felt like my own. We really miss her. Frowner

On a lighter note, I just love being an auntie finally! 2 year old niece, 4 month old nephew and another due in Dec. They are gorgeous.

Hi everyone. I did it!!

Bought an Eee PC 900.

It is very nifty, I can't believe how tiny it is, so teeny it fits in my handbag and is very light.

I can't wait to go on my trip now to try it out. The guy who sold it to me said that I could pack it in my suitcase if I wanted to, it would not get damaged, I don't think I want to do that.

I have tried it out at home and it has picked up the wireless network very easily. Will wait and see what happens overseas. I will keep you all posted when I return.

Only 10 more sleeps!!!

Razzer Hi Jee Dee.
I've been away for the past few days and just saw this discussion. We have 2 laptops and two desktops, but bought an EEE PC 900 two months ago.
They are fantastic not only for keeping in touch with our older children , but also as others have commented for viewing photos at a bigger size (for those who are visually challenged) and also as backup photo storage. We also have copies of all important documents, itnineraries, maps , copies of key websites for our forthcoming European Cavalcade tour (22 Oct), just 60 sleeps. We've already used ours quite a bit around Australia, and its not much bigger or heavier than our previous diaries.
Have a wonderful time on your trip, and I'm sure you'll find they're not just "another" gadget.

Assume these come with a lock of some sorts? It should be, given the motherlode of important data being carried around. Also, something that small is more easily picked or misplaced so should be locked.
