Hibiscus, you will get lost, that's almost a certainty and you will turn down one calle (as they're called) and find water at the end and no bridge, so you turn around and try again. But if you remember to look at street signs and realize that your tour group will nearly always (can't guarantee this but it's usual) meet at Piazza San Marco, you'll be fine.

The first time we were in Venice my husband got left behind by the group while he was lining up a photoshot and got lost but he knew he was supposed to end up at the Rialto and he had the TD's cell number. I was a mess but he could have cared less, he was enjoying being lost in Venice so much.

It's actually fun "getting lost" in Venice because you aren't really far from being "unlost"!

As others have advised, there are signs pointing to St. Mark's (San Marco) or the train station "Ferro Via" so you'll know which direction to go. I had a map that was provided to us and churches (ciesa) were marked on it so that also helped me navigate.

If you decide to opt out of the optional to Murano and Burano, keep in mind that the water bus goes there and as long as you have enough hours for exploring on your own, you can get out there by yourselves. I do understand, however, that the lunch optional in Burano is quite good.

Buon viaggio!

Take the Vaporetto #1 or 82 whichever stops at San Marco and just ride the Grand Canal like a mini cruise- It'll take 1 hour. Do it when the sun is setting and the lights of Venice come on - just magical and cheap. While you're waing for the boat, have a Bellini (last at 14 euro so savor it!) at Harry's Bar (Hemmingway and others' haunt).

Walk the Rialto Bridge for a free view of Venice and the Grand Canal from high up and the shops along the way (including the mask making one).

Since you're going in February, the weather will be cold and daylight limited so plan and dress accordingly. I assume outdoor cafes will be closed for the season and only indoor ones will be open. Boat schedules will also operate on a winter schedule.

Never heard Bellinis being a horror. White peach nectar + champagne (Proseco)- what's not to like! Wink The only horror is the price. Big Grin Big Grin

The bar is very small wth 2 bartenders - one white haired bartender has been there since the begining of time. (He was also seen in a TV piece on Venice on the Travel Channel - Samantha Brown along with the Cipriani the owner) Also possible to have a small expensive bite to eat.

RobertC- Yes, I was pretty sure I wanted to do St. Marks & the Bell tower. Thanks for the tips about the shops behind St.Marks.

I just wasn't sure if I should have a bunch of things planned or just meander & let venice happen for us. Probally a bit of both!

Great tips keep em' comin'!

Were going to Italy on the Italian Discovery tour in Oct. We've been to Europe before and have been with Trafalgar before..My questions on this tour, what are the excursion tours and how did you like St. John Hotel?

We went straight to St. Mark's Square and went up the Bell Tower before it got busy (fabulous views from up there) and then we spent the rest of the day shopping and wandering around the streets of Venice and then had an included dinner at our hotel in Lido (switched from the night before since we went to Burano for a late lunch).

Venice is wonderful.

Jeannie: How did you get from the Lido to St. Marks Square? I am going in Oct and will want to see things on our own, but the Lido seems to be a great distant from the hotel...
