I also received a mini tripod which will no doubt be useful. Also received a Nintendo DS with a Crosswords game to help pass the time on those long flights. Along with that and my iPod I should have it covered!!!

BTW SM - the best travel gadget is free. I've spent the last 2 days on Google Earth and mapping out our independent itinerary (well an approx one as I have to allow for Hubby's unpredictability) and it's a great tool for working out how long it takes to travel between places etc.
I see street view has got us covered in Australia and NZ but they could have waited until I'd re-landscaped Roll Eyes

Agree Aug. The benefits the net provides - for "free" - can save you so much time and money. People often ask how we knew of this or that and its always (well, almost always ...) because of a little bit of research on the net.

And, you can do it as you travel. You need no skills or knowledge - just a connection, a key board, and common sense (Mmmm ...) ... Smiler

There is almost nothing you can't find - just by putting in a few "specific" words.

I feel your suggestion here must therefore go at the top of any list on this thread. Smiler

Aw shucks, the new year is getting off to a good start Wink

Margaret - I'm cutting out the sudoku's from the newspaper - easy to pop inside my travel bag and they keep me going for hours. It's always annoying when the ones in the flight magazine have already been done Mad.

Tony54 - the 2 Lonely Planets I bought on the UK and Ireland have been fantastic. Hubby has gone all anal with the Irish one and has a system of little post it stickers along the top and down the sides, different colours for different things Big Grin and I can tell he is not so impressed with my more haphazard system on the UK book Roll Eyes
I bought a lovely new suitcase and a matching cabin bag yesterday - 40% off! I was tempted by the Samsonite with spinner wheels but fell in love with the gorgeous shade of red that the Wenger one came in Roll Eyes. It also felt quite a bit lighter than the spinner. Got it at David Jones but Myer had 35% off the Samsonite range if you are interested. Smiler

Mine was Somsonite- I just can't wait to pack it! I may be almost more anal than your husband. So we don't have to cart heavy books about I am photo copying all the important pages on Athens with everything we need to know and we will just take those. All this for a trip that is still nearly 5 months away.

Hi Ladies,

Roll Eyes MMMMMM Mine is 8 and a half months away and I have also started looking round the sales for bargins for our trip already. Those suitcases sound really nice Augusta.

Have stared looking for new suitcases myself but have not come across any with 4 wheels yet.

.Mr FTET insists we get the 4 wheeled variety so we will keep looking at the sales Cool till we find the one!s he wants.
Wink
He seems to think that we will handle the 4 wheeled suitcase much easier.??????Will tell Mr FTET that they are heavier than the other type so that might change his mind..Will have to look into the suitcase choices more before making a decision.
Now that it is 2009 I feel like we are on our ways.WOOHOO!!!!!! Still a long time to go yet. Wink Wink

Augusta,

Being a "map guy" I've' often been tempted to download "Goggle Earth," but I'm always concerned with conflicts and (as AOL did in the early days and perhaps still does) take over the computer.
So, I would ask: Have you encountered any problems, and is removal reasonably easy, and hassle free?

I'm sure I would find it both useful and fun, but with 30 years* of playing with personal computers, I've been burned too often with "freebies." Mad

Your thoughts?

Bob

Hi Bob
My son downloaded Google Earth a couple of years ago and it was quite a novelty but my husband uninstalled it quite easily when he was 'cleaning up' the laptop. Kids are forever downloading and clogging things up but I don't think it was Google earth in particular that was a problem.
Now I just use Google maps (accessed at the top left of the home page) - this has a traditional map view, a satellite view that can zoom in or out and a street view where available. If you like maps, I am sure you will be in heaven! It's mindblowing that we can now just enter a name or address and be looking at it in seconds. You can also get directions from one place to another.
It's such a valuable tool - for example, we are going to leave our tour in Galway on the last day instead of going all the way back to Dublin as in the itinerary. I was able to find out exactly how to get from the Cathedral that the tour will be visiting to the rental car depot and that it is only 600m away. Makes planning so much easier.

First computer I ever touched was in 1981 - an Apple that pretty much only played games like Apple Invader Big Grin and data was saved on cassette tapes Roll Eyes

Augusta,

Shows how much I know - I was under the impression the Google Earth & Google Maps were part of the SAME package.

My TRS 80 (I think the "80 indicated "(1980 TRS=Tandy Radio Shack) Like yours, any data was saved using an audio cassette recorder. There was, initially, no software so we had to write our own. I remember that my fist project was to write "check writing " program.

Ah, the not so good old days.

Thanks for your imput.

Bob

I downloaded Google Earth and haven't seen any problems connected with it, however I find it very confusing to use and rarely use it. Probably if I actually spent some time figuring it out it would be useful. Computer has more memory than anyone could possibly want so have never tried to remove it.

I found the same problem with it....until I had a lesson from the children. Big Grin It is a very useful program for research.
