joe ~ I suspect it will come down to the "tipping policy" of the company you choose to use for your Australian tour.

joe, as we have all said before there is no tipping custom here in Australia, except for maybe rounding up to the nearest dollar which I find is more for convenience than anything else.

AATKings (which is Trafalgar in Australia) operate many day tours and longer tours for overseas and Australian tourists, I have been on one of these day tours and there was no mention of tipping, mind you most of the people taking the tour were Australian, which is why I suspect tipping is only promoted for overseas visitors.

On my non TT to OZ/NZ both TDs (we had 2 TDS and split the group for manageability and joined forces on flights) were non Aussies. One was a Brit with Kiwi citizenship pending, and one was from Ohio, USA...so despite being in OZ/NZ, these employees were employed on a wage + tip basis. They also directed tours in Europe. The drivers were Aussie and Kiwi and received tips.

I recognize the non tipping policy in the country, but the TDs have to be considered as outside contractors unless you get a Kiwi or Aussie TD. Restaurant/cabs no tips, just round up tab for convenience. That's my interpretation anyway. Cool

Roxy ~ I believe that tipping is specific too and encouraged by the tour coach industry worldwide, regardless of where the TD comes from, I believe it is how they keep the upfront costs to the consumer down.

You would not see tipping in Australia when Australians only are on a coach tour, but I strongly believe that tipping is encouraged to overseas visitors as backed up by yourself and others.
