Hi,

As many of you know, we have new tougher regulations in force in Australia (maybe elsewhere as well?) which limit the amount of liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, lotions and so forth which can be taken in the cabin on international flights out of Oz.

A local newspaper records the experience of a lady flying out of Sydney who had her Vegemite confiscated, as it is a paste, and the Vegemite jar was larger than 100 ml (or grams, they equate these).

She was outraged, and was quoted as saying "what did they think, I had a Vegemite bomb??"

Actually we should not even mention that word now in an airport, it can get you unceremoniously hauled away.

She should have had it in her check in luggage.

I bought a 235 grm jar today and it cost me AUD8.6! How does that compare with Australian/NZ prices?

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.

I have never understood the Australian obsession with Vegemite! It's made by a non-Australian multinational company and virtually indistinguishable from Marmite anyway! I like the stuff but why would anyone weigh down their luggage with it for a 2-4 week holiday? They are not exactly emigrating are they?

Indistinguishable for Marmite my eye - they have two distinctly different tastes.

Marmite is one of the most horrible things on the face of the planet and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Vegemite.

I never travel without my Vegemite and I always put it in my checked luggage.

I go through a tube of it every two weeks when away.

travel is but a memory for the future - like about 7 years or so!!!!

They are both horrible. Promite is the only choice of the real Aussie, best on a crumpet.

Marmite makes an average sort of sunscreen, but that's all.

Bonox was not bad either.

As far as I am concerned, Promite, Vegemite and Marmite have all taken on a chemical taste these days, nothing at all like the flavour of my childhood when a fresh slice of white bread and Marmite was a joy.

Whatever they have done to them today has produced a very 'dodgy' flavour and I would love to have them back they way they were.

I always favoured Marmite as the best.

And the original. Vegemite is nothing more than a pale immitation and a rip-off of the superior original Smiler.

(My local supermarket has recently started selling vegemite for some inexplicable reason, so I bought some out of curiosity. I'll stick to Marmite!)

Chris: Most supermarkets only stock by demand, so the demand must be there for a refined clientele....the Aussies. Wink

I seriously doubt there are many Australians in my village Smiler. Both Marmite and Vegemite are sold internationally, I believe.

As far as the person who originally complained, though; the rules clearly say "no liquids, gels, or pastes in amounts exceeding 100ml" so Vegemite clearly falls into this category! And yes, you could certainly mix a liquid explosive into a jar of Vegemite.

How awful a thought, death by Vegemite. An Improvised Vegemite Device. Dynamite now superseded by....forget it.

But no-one eating it would know different Big Grin

Chris: Next time you are in your supermarket ask them why they are stocking Vegemite, there has to be a reason. Smiler

Nobody in their right mind would waste vegemite by placing an exlosive in it. Big Grin
