Jo, I found this definition of a bank holiday.

A bank holiday is a public holiday in the United Kingdom and also in the Republic of Ireland. Although there is no legal right to time off on these days, the majority of the population not employed in essential services (e.g. utilities, fire, ambulance, police, health-care workers) receive them as holidays; those employed in essential services usually receive extra pay for working on these days. Bank holidays are so called because they are days upon which banks are shut and therefore (traditionally) no other businesses could operate. Legislation allows certain payments to be deferred to the next working day.

We still have a bank holiday in N.S.W. I think it is sometime in August. Once many businesses would be closed for bank holiday, now it would be rare to find many, other than banks, that observe it as a public holiday.

I don't think we have a Bank holiday in South Australia (I could be wrong), when you are retired everyday is a public holiday. Big Grin

Chris; Welcome back- now would you please explain what a Bank Holiday is?

Just another name for a public holiday. So-called because banks were (and still are) closed on such days, although these days most shops are open.

Here in the states we have 9 national (public) holidays which are also bank holidays. The Federal Rerserve Banks are closed and so it is not a valid banking business date.

Most businesses, except retail and other service/entertainment industries will give their employees the day off as a paid holiday. These businesses still operate; only the banking payment systems are closed.

While on some of these holdays, banks have the option of opening as a convenience, the value date of your transaction will be the next business day...the same way as if you were to make a deposit after closing hours.

Thanks for the replies.

It looks like we should be OK. It can be quite difficult for a large tour group when there is a holiday. We have had occasions where the TD has had difficulty finding a restaurant and/or washrooms. I remember one time when our TD could not find a place for lunch until 4:00 pm.
