Steve:

Hope you got a garlic bread fix later in the day. We will always remember the food in Italy and Sicily. Our roots (grandparents) are in Sicily and we can't wait to return on our own to explore their ancestral areas. Local food and wine, of course, included!

Darn, I had forgotten about my hunger pangs - you just had to remind me, didn't you? Big Grin Big Grin

Yes, we did the Trafalgar winter tour of Italy and Sicily in 2006. It started from Rome, and headed South to Sicily, where we spent several wonderful days. The weather was perfect except on the day of the Capri excursion when it poured. As an unexpected bonus, the TD rearranged the schedule to allow an optional to Pompeii, which wasn't listed in the Trafalgar list. We were over the moon. There was an extended family of New Yorkers (I think), whose roots were from Sicily (I think some were born there) - they made the tour interesting, to say the least - they had a great time.

Steven (## note this means I am serious) ~ We are going on Best of Italy & Sicily in Sept. can you give me a bit of info on the crossing to Sicily. The book says 'o/nite steamer crossing to Sicily', does the coach go on the steamer? Do you have to pack an o/nite bag or will our cases come to the cabin?

Thanks petal, in anticipation. Smiler

You lucky so and so Dimpz - I insist on full report when you return.

A bit of a difference of opinion, is good for knocking off mutual rough edges. I, myself, am almost spherical now, and polished to a near mirror finish. However, Carolina discovered a little flaw the other day, and I have had the scratch removed! Big Grin

Dimpz - the Port that you will leave Italy from, is different from the one we used - our crossing took only about an hour, and yes the coach travelled on the ferry too.

I have no experience of an overnight ferry, but I would imagine that the coach will go with you, but that your luggage will be off-loaded before the coach drives onto the ferry, and taken to your cabin, as unloading the coach on board would be a logistical nightmare. Don't quote me however! There is bound to someone who actually knows what they are talking about, around soon!

Hi Carolina ~ Perhaps you could help me with my question about the steamer (at this point we will both ignore Steve) Also could you give me some idea of what the weather was like as we will be travelling at the same time of year that you did.

Thanks Smiler

Dimpz:

We took the same trip and made the crossing on Oct 1, 2006 and it was very comfortable. The coach was also on board with our luggage. The lull of the sea made for a great night's sleep. The toilet and shower(private, in room) left a little to be desired, but it's adequate for overnight. The sink/vanity is in the cabin by the beds. We packed our own overnight bag and carried it with us.

We boarded about 6 pm and were issued dinner vouchers. It was buffet style, and there were several choices for each course. The rest of the luggage remained on the coach, which we boarded in the morning and we and the luggage arrived together at the hotel in Palermo in time for breakfast. We were able to do a quick freshening(?) up before we began the day's tour.

This was our first trip to Italy and we under-estimated the heat in Sept. and early Oct. Sicily was still very hot, so you might want to include a few very lightweight garments.

You will love this trip!

Carolina ~ Thank you for the info, much appreciated. This will be our 2nd trip to Italy & we chose this time of year on advice that it would/should not be too hot. Confused Can you give me an idea of the temps. you experienced?

Steve & Dimpz:

I can't keep up with you! You're confusing me to no end.

Anyway, the weather, as I said above, was on the warm side. Sweater sets and khaki type pants were perfect. Three of our hotels had outdoor pools that were open so bring a suit if you think you might enjoy a swim. You will need a slightly heavier sweater or sweatshirt type jacket if you do the Mt. Etna excursion. And don't miss Mt. Etna. You'll be sorry if you do.

I found jeans a bit too hot for comfort and wished I had taken a pair of lighter weight cropped pants for those days in the blazing sun in Pompeii and Selinute. Hope this helps.

Make sure you bring a small travel umbrella. It saved the day a couple of times and fits easily into the Trafalgar bag.
